Abstract

This article is the result of a first part of our doctoral research project on child abuse and transmission of the paternal function. We are particularly interested in cases of abuse of children in families where these situations are repeated from generation to generation. We carried out a literature review and a series of semi –structured interviews with three families hosted by the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF for its Spanish initials) of Salamina city and six professionals of the same institute. From this analysis, we found out that some elements of the social representation of the father were still prevalent today. This elements form the image of a creator, source of authority, perceived as violent and absent. We share our thoughts and questions about the relationship between the functions and characteristics attributed to the father from the colonization era, and the representation of the father emerging from our interviews.
