In this article, we will synthetize some of the topics examined inthe Master’s Degree research project titled: Social work in Colombia, aproposal for renewal from a Marxist critique perspective, defended in themonth of February 2012. Three elements of analysis will be presented inorder to approach such professional renewal opportunities: 1. the currenthistorical moment of Colombia’s social reality, especially with regard to Latin America; 2. the hegemonic professional traditions of Social Workin Colombia, highlighting the main trends according to reflections anddebates in the past twenty years, and 3. the expectations for a social workin Colombia including Marxists theories in the analysis of social reality aswell as the profession itself. We seek to provide some clues and hypothesis,expanded in the Master´s Degree research project, with the intention ofcontinuing the construction of analytical social work in Colombia, and anexchange of ideas with other professionals, educators, and students, forthis necessary plural discussion.
